Many, many years ago I was in Ordzhonikidze with a group of American students. We were there for an overnight before traveling on the Georgian Military Highway to Tbilisi. We were staying in the Intourist Hotel... In the evening, around 8 pm, I left my 2nd floor room and headed towards the elevator. An attractive woman with a couple of male companions also got into the elevator with me and we all went down to the lobby of the hotel. However, as soon as the elevator door opened and you and your companions got out of the elevator, everyone standing in the lobby immediately began looking at you. As you came out of the elevator and walked towards the exit of the hotel, a few more men joined your company. I remained in the lobby of the hotel. However, I couldn't help but notice that in front of the hotel there were a number of cars, including a police car with its blue flashing lights on. Without much delay, you and your companions sat in the cars and the cars with a police escort left the hotel grounds. In the meantime, I walked up to the hotel administrator and asked what was happening. She looked at me as if I was from another planet to be asking such a questions, especially since she had noticed that you and I walked out of the elevator together. Realizing that I really did not know who you were, she told me that this was the most famous Russian singer Alla Pugachova. In all honesty I had never heard your name before. The next day when we arrived in Tbilisi, I asked my friends if they had ever heard of a singer Alla Pugachova. I don't have to tell you what their answer was... Then a number of years later, I was in Minsk with another group of American tourists. During our sightseeing tour I saw posters all over the city announcing the dates of your concerts at the main stadium. I asked the guide if tickets were still available. She thought I was crazy asking such a questions. She told me that all the tickets were sold a very, very long time ago and that it was impossible to get even one ticket. I decided, nevertheless, to try to go to your concert that evening. Knowing how the system worked in the former Soviet Union, I stopped a cab driver and asked him if he would be able to get a ticket to your concert if I paid him $10. Without hesitation, he waved to me to get into the cab and off went to the central staduim. We got to the stadium, he got out of the cab, walked up to a guy, gave him some money, got a ticket, and bingo. I believe there were 40-50 thousand people in the stadium and eveyone of them was having a ball. Then three years ago, I did not have to go to Ordzhonikidze or Minsk, because you came to Boston. You were great in Minsk and you were great in Boston. My question now is when are you coming back to Boston again? This time I might even have the courage to come up to stage after the performance and introduce myself to you. Let me end by wishing you to stay eternally young... Here's a toast to a born singer!!!
